The National Gallery of Ireland (Gallery) is Ireland’s major national cultural institution devoted to the collection and care of fine art.  Comprising some 16,000 paintings, drawings, watercolours, miniatures, prints, sculpture and decorative arts, the institution's extensive holdings include masterpieces by many of the most celebrated figures in the history of western European art.  In addition, the Gallery houses the most representative collection of historic Irish art.  Funded mainly by the State, the Gallery employs more than 160 staff and provides free access to the public 361 days a year.

The Gallery wishes to recruit a Manager - Communications, Marketing & Digital Engagement for the Public Engagement Department on a permanent basis. The Public Engagement Department comprises three departments; Visitor Experience, Education, and Communications, Marketing, & Digital Engagement. The purpose of this role is to manage a group of specialists and to provide effective leadership on Communications, Marketing & Digital Engagement strategy. Reporting to the Head of Public Engagement the Manager - Communications, Marketing & Digital Engagement will:

  • Develop the Gallery’s marketing & communications strategy to effectively position the Gallery, attract, and retain visitors onsite and online
  • Implement the Gallery’s marketing & communications plan to achieve visitor number, audience engagement, & brand reach goals
  • Play a hands on role on the communications side in particular, running a number of campaigns each year start to finish
  • Manage the Gallery’s relationships with external PR, creative & digital agencies
  • Ensure efficient & effective use of marketing & communications budgets through close monitoring
  • Actively monitor and report on Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to measure effectiveness of marketing & communications
  • Establish partnerships and manage relationships with strategic media groups, tourist boards, festivals & other key cultural organisations
  • Run regular press and publicity events
  • Assist in implementing Gallery-wide CRM platform
  • Develop and support a Digital Engagement strategy with a goal of providing meaningful digital experiences for Gallery visitors onsite and online
  • Support two Digital Engagement Assistants in ensuring they have the necessary leadership, materials, training, & support to carry out their roles as part of the Public Engagement Department
  • Actively monitor and report on KPI’s to measure effectiveness of digital engagement activity
  • Align the exhibitions schedule to explore long-term digital engagement opportunities for key exhibitions
  • Oversee and support a team of communications and digital engagement professionals by providing clear goals, opportunities for professional development, and the necessary support for the team to operate effectively
  • Foster cross-departmental co-operation within Public Engagement and across the Gallery
  • Contribute positively to the overall environment and internal communications of the Gallery
  • Adopt further duties as required

The successful candidate will have;

  • A relevant third level qualification
  • A strong background in managing all aspects of marketing & communications with proven track record of growing and developing audiences
  • Excellent knowledge of best practice and emerging trends in arts & culture communications and marketing
  • A proven ability to effectively influence internal and external stakeholders and drive inter-departmental collaboration
  • Experience in effectively managing multiple work-streams across projects with 12-18 month life spans
  • A proven ability to structure workload effectively
  • Excellent people development skills and the ability to create clear and realistic goals
  • An ability to coaching and supporting the team to maximise their talents and abilities
  • Analytical approach with the ability to combine data, knowledge & experience when making decisions
